4.5/5

In today's world, Morse code is not something that most of us think about, or have to deal with. However, there are some solid arguments to be made about the importance of Morse code, both historically and generally.

Still, Morse code is widely recognized even today. Interestingly enough, it's still used by amateur radio enthusiasts, and it's even more prevalent in aviation and aeronautical fields (radio navigational aids still identify and use it, i.e. VORs and NDBs). Morse code is also a valid alternative form of communication for people with various disabilities.

If you're a Linux user, and you find yourself using written Morse code a lot, then we suggest that you check out Telegraph.

Telegraph is a straightforward, good-looking, and practical Morse code translator for Linux. In short, it's a free and open-source app that allows you to write and decode Morse. Nothing more, nothing less.

The app boasts a simple GUI with two fields. You can switch between inputting Morse code, or inputting regular letters and numbers. You can write any message and see the resulting Morse code, and vice versa.

Oh, and if you're wondering about the name, it's inspired from the fact that Morse code was most commonly used to send pulse messages via telegraphs (at least in Samuel Morse's time).

Telegraph isn't and will probably never be the most popular Linux application out there, and that's quite understandable. Nevertheless, for Morse code aficionados, it's a nice little app that does exactly what it says on the label. It allows you to write messages in Morse or translate Morse into normal language. It's modern, it's lightweight, and it's free and open-source.
