Ubuntu is without a doubt a very popular and user-friendly Linux-based OS, and definitely one of the most well-rounded ones as well when it comes to features.

Be that as it may, Ubuntu does not have a default sticky notes app, something somewhat invaluable for users who either want to stay as organized as possible or simply tend to forget things.

Unlike Ubuntu, Linux Mint has a default sticky notes app, (called Notes) and it's quite good. Where are we going with this? Naturally, since Linux Mint is Ubuntu-based, the preinstalled app called Notes also works on Ubuntu. In fact, Notes should work without problems on almost any Linux distro, regardless of the desktop environment.

Notes is the default note-taking app for the Linux Mint desktop. It's an open-source and free, tiny app written in Python and makes use of the GTK3 toolkit.

It has all the basic features one might expect from app of this sort: text formatting (Bold, Italics, Bullet Lists, Bullet Points, etc.), 8 different colors for easy differentiation, a spell-checker, automatic and manual backups, an "Always on Top" option, note groups, and the ability to import and export notes.

The app only seems to be available via the third-party Mint Tools PPA. TO install it on your system (for example, on Ubuntu), you need to add the repository to your software sources.

To do this, open a Terminal and enter the following commands: "sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kelebek333/mint-tools," followed by "sudo apt update," and finish with "sudo apt install sticky."

Considering its feature set, Notes is actually one of the best equipped apps of this sort out there. It manages to remain friendly to beginners, while also offering power users a surprising amount of advanced options.

If there's one thing we wish Notes would have is a better status bar integration (in the case of Ubuntu 20.04 and 21.10). Another little niggle is the fact that hte app doesn't have a keyboard shortcut for hiding/showing the notes on demand. We're not going to lie, this might make it a bit awkward to use, especially when you have another dozen other open apps.

Despite its shortcomings, Notes is a very good app, and, if you're a post-it/sticky notes fan, you should definitely give it a try.
