Regardless of the OS your computer is currently running, there are numerous very nicely designed note-taking apps out there - it's just a matter of having the patience of finding them and trying them out.

We're not saying that Notable is perfect, but it's definitely one of the best note-taking apps out there.

Besides being a gorgeously minimalistic app with next to no GUI bloat, Notable has a lot going for it. For starters, it boasts support for full GitHub Flavored Markdown. You can write your notes using KaTeX expressions, add Mermaid diagrams, and more.

The app boasts a nice and user-friendly Markdown editor (in fact, it's the same one VS Code uses) with multi-cursor support, a minimap, and built-in syntax highlighting.

By default, your notes are stored on your computer's disk, but you can also use Dropbox (and other cloud services) to synchronize them. You can even use Git on your notes.

Notable also boasts something called a multi-note editor. This feature allows you to perform a wide range of actions to multiple notes at once. These actions include adding notes to favorites, pinning and deleting them, as well as organizing them via tags.

The app is also quite keyboard-friendly (so almost everything can be done without touching the mouse). Last but not least, we have to mention the Zen Mode which makes reading and editing feel a lot less distracting, and the split-screen editor (which provides a real-time preview of your notes).

Notable allows you to perform fuzzy searches, share notes via a link, export notes to Markdown, HTML, and PDF. Of course, notes can also be imported (i.e. from Evernote or Boostnote libraries) and the app comes with support for attachments.

Even though Notable may not appeal to everyone, it's without a doubt a very capable and well-designed, tiny note-taking app. It manages to offer so much without ever feeling intimidating.

Future plans include the addition of a built-in synchronization engine, a built-in version control system, mobile apps, and support for plugins.

What's new in Notable 1.8.4:

  • IMPROVEMENTS:
  • Bundling OS-specific dependencies only when needed
  • This removes a file from Windows bundles that tripped Windows Defender into finding a false positive
  • Importing: ensuring arbitrarily large notes collections containing arbitrarily many files with the same name are still imported correctly, assuming the underlying importing library can parse the collection in the first place
