Thoroughly organize your media library with the help of MediaChips, a nice free and open-source app. #Media Library Organizer #Media Organizer #Library Tagger #Organizer #Tagger #Metadata
Organizing, sorting, or browsing through large media libraries can be a pain without the proper tools, despite the fact that most modern OSes do provide a decent set of functions that might prove to be more or less useful.
MediaChips is one tool designed from the ground up for one singular purpose - that of allowing you to watch, browse, sort, and manage your media library no matter its size.
The "Chips" part from its name refers to metadata, those small but important pieces of information that are added to media files in order to make them easier to sort and organize (can include tags, ratings, bookmarks, dates, numbers, etc.)
The app is built using Electron, it's completely free and open-source, and it comes with bespoke binaries for all the major platforms out there: Windows, macOS, and Linux (AppImage format).
By now, it should be quite clear what MediaChips is and isn't. It's an app with a very modern GUI and built with web technologies, that allows you to organize your video library with ease, and add any extra (or edit the already existing information) to your videos (to make them a lot easier to organize, filter, sort, and find).
In terms of features, you get a sleek tabbed GUI, a decent video player with video preview on hover, a few GUI themes, and the ability to customize the appearance of the application (colors, fonts, menus, and other such elements), and password protection.
Other noteworthy features include the option to save and load filters, quick filters, favorites and search, as well as the option to sort by various other parameters and metadata, find duplicates by file size, and some basic file operations (such as move, delete, open folder with video).
Is MediaChips a good application for sorting large media libraries? For sure yes. It's free, it's open-source, and it provides users with a very functional GUI and some nifty and interesting features for getting this particular job done.
Is it perfect? As with most things, no. The app does work with many formats, but not with all of them. It's also an Electron app which will for sure annoy purists, at least in principle.
However, the app's roadmap hints at various improvements that should make their way into the project not that far in the future. These include the addition of image galleries (aka image support), and wider support for file formats and extensions.
