Godot Engine is an open source, cross-platform and 100% free graphical software project designed from the offset to be used for creating 2D and 3D games that work on all mainstream operating system (mobile and desktop) or on the Web.

It is a game engine that comes with a wide range of powerful features, as well as a great collection of tools that allow game developers to concentrate on making amazing games without too much hassle.

Key features include an intuitive and uncluttered graphical user interface that looks and acts the same on all supported operating systems (see the next section for details), context-sensitive tools, built-in comprehensive documentation, a code editor, support for animating 2D and 3D elements, dedicated 3D and 2D physics engines, as well as a source level debugger.

It comes with support for importing 3D models from Blender, Maya or Max applications, supports blend shapes and skeleton deforms, includes material models, flexible shader, and offers powerful post process filters.

Despite the fact that it is oriented towards game programmers, the application can also be used by game designers, graphic designers, level designers, animators or any other type of artists.

With Godot Engine, game developers will be able to become productive in a matter of hours, as well as to create multiplatform games without reinventing the wheel. The games created with Godot will work on the Android, Windows Phone and iOS mobile platforms, on the Web, on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita gaming consoles, and on the Linux, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows computer operating systems.

Being designed from the ground up to be a cross-platform application, Godot Engine works well on all GNU/Linux distributions, as well as on the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. It supports both 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (x86) hardware platforms.

What's new in Godot Engine 3.1.1:

  • A security issue was reported and fixed. This change does add some API to Godot in case you need to be able to deserialize Object data. Please see This PR for details. If you do not use networking in your project you should not be affected. However GDNative ABI was changed so any native plugins need to be rebuilt for 3.1.1.
  • GLES 3 support for depth textures was fixed. This was a regression in 3.1 from 3.0.x.
  • GLES 2 crash on older iOS devices was resolved.
  • OS.get_unique_id() was fixed on Android.
