Creating spring-like animations for apps, widgets, and GUIs is usually done with the help of pretty complex and usually very specialized software, and the process is not something one might describe as straightforward.

It's a good thing, then, that Elastic exists. In short, Elastic is a Linux-only GTK/libadwaita application that allows you to design and export spring physics-based animations for your projects with just a few mouse clicks.

The short answer is - very. There are two main self-explanatory sections within the app: Basic and Interactive. The two sections are pretty similar even though one is for simpler animations while the other is for more complex animations.

Both sections allow you to control parameters such as the Damping Ratio, Mass, Stiffness, and Epsilon. The main difference is that the Basic section allows you to control the initial velocity via a slider, while the Interactive section allows you to manually create it (by dragging a handle to see it return with the spring physics).

One of the best aspects of Elastic is that it also has a coding section at the bottom, that allows you to effortlessly view and copy snippets to the clipboard. In short, you can export projects to C, JS, Python, Rust, or Vala.

Elastic also allows you to preview the translations, rotations, and scaling transformations of your animations. You can also see the animation curve and duration on a graph if you so choose to, as well as enable or disable the damping effect from the Settings section.

Elastic is a very new application, and it may receive a series of useful upgrades during future updates. Still, as it stands, it's a very good and usable application, hence, if you're looking for a simple app for building animations on Linux, then do check it out.

What's new in Elastic 0.1.4:

  • Visual refinements to match newer GNOME apps
  • Fix Rust template
  • Fix typography
