A GUI file synchronization application that works with some of the most popular cloud providers out there. #Cloud Backup #Rclone GUI #Cloud Synchronization #Rclone #Cloud #Backup
Celeste is an interesting Linux application built on top of Rclone. Its main purpose is to act as a versatile GUI file synchronization client for your system.
The main selling point of Celeste is the fact that it works with pretty much all of the popular cloud storage providers out there such as Dropbox, Google Drive (hit or miss at the current time), Nextcloud, Owncloud, pCloud, and WebDAV.
Of course, the main advantage of Celeste is that it allows you to synchronize files and folders two and from multiple cloud providers at once, without having to rely on either the official or other third-party apps. from time to time The fact that it's based on Rclone is also a good thing, since Rclone provides a series amount of features such as file syncing, backup, drive mounting, and even encryption. It's also open-source and has stood the test of time, so to speak.
In terms of actual features, Celeste provides two-way sync, the option to choose actions when a local and remote file is being updated, the ability to exclude files and folders from the synchronization process, and, as mentioned, connect to all of the supported cloud providers at the same time.
Even though the app is not spectacular, it does look good on most modern Linux distros, and has that fine native look and feels thanks to its GTK4/Libadwaita GUI. Last but not least, Celeste is written in Rust, which makes it remarkably swift and responsive.
To be fair, at the time of testing, the app wasn't looking like a proper "finished product." The login procedure was a bit clunky, and the more cloud providers we added, the more the app froze.
However, this is quite understandable, since the app is currently in an Alpha development stage. Hence, it's a good idea to back up your data before you decide to try it, and probably not rely on it for important jobs.
Celeste might not be perfect right now, but the potential is clearly visible. With a bit of extra time and work, we're sure that it can definitely become one of the best implementations of Rclone for Linux.
This should make it very appealing for users who are looking to synchronize files to and from multiple cloud providers at the same time.
