Cavalier For Linux

Audio visualizers have been around for a long, long time, and they're basically omnipresent in most audio and media player software. An audio visualizer produces real-time animated graphics based on the music/sounds that are currently played.

If you like the aesthetic and mood an audio visualizer provides, or maybe you just want to spice up your presentations or music-related live streams, then you may want to check out Cavalier.

Cavalier is a Linux-only, free, and open-source application that's based on CAVA. Because CAVA is not what one might call popular, it's worth noting that it's an open-source, bar spectrum audio visualizer for the terminal. It's not designed for scientific use, but rather it's mainly designed to look responsive and sleek. https://github.com/karlstav/cava

Cavalier is written in Python and uses a super modern and stylish, LibAdwaita GUI to make the whole experience of using CAVA a lot more appealing to the general user base.

For an app that's designed strictly for aesthetic reasons, it has a surprising amount of customization options. For starters, you're provided with three drawing modes: Wave (the softer-looking of the bunch), Levels (tapping into that retro vibe most of us love), and the classic Bars (which is also the classic CAVA look).

You can choose between one to 10 color gradients for both the background and the foreground display of the visualizer, as well as configure aspects such as smoothing, noise reduction, sensitivity, channels (Mono/Stereo), and so forth.

Quite honestly, Cavalier won't blow your socks off, and that's perfectly fine. It's whole premise is to appeal to users who love the look of an audio visualizer and make it a lot more visible on accessible directly on their desktops.

The app delivers on its fantasy, and offers a surprising amount of customization features but we would have loved it a bit more if it would have had a few extra drawing modes (even though this might actually be a limitation of CAVA itself rather than the app).
