One of the best free scalable vector graphics editors for macOS and Linux systems. #SVG editor #Edit SVG #Vector App #SVG #Vector #Editor
When we think of SVG editors, the usual suspects are Adobe Illustrator, Sketch, and Inkscape. Of course, there are other, surprisingly good alternatives, one of which is Boxy SVG.
The whole point of Boxy SVG is to be as user-friendly as typical users want, while still being able to offer most of the required features for power users or developers. We wouldn't go as far as say that Boxy SVG is hands-down the best SVG editor out there, but there's no denying that it makes a good case for itself. Oh, and it's also free for Linux, hooray for us!
For starters, it's worth noting that Boxy SVG is built using Electron and it uses a Chromium-based rendering engine. It has a SVG and CSS code inspector tool that's very similar to Chrome Dev Tools.
It's capable of outputting SVGs while preserving all the required elements such as IDs, classes, titles, and other metadata info, and it also capable of editing SVG sprites.
First off, there's the app's modern and stylish GUI. Its design is heavily inspired by other big names in the industry such as Adobe Illustrator and Sketch.
The app boasts extensive support for on-canvas editing of geometrical objects, transformation, and editing of said elements, as well as other element properties. You're also provided with various arrangement operations which should boost your productivity such as align to, rotate, flip, order, group, and so forth.
One of the best things about Boxy SVG is the fact that it supports a plethora of formats. For example, you can save your projects to SVG and SVGZ formats, as well as export them to PNG, JPG, JPEG, WebP, PDF, and even HTML5.
Boxy SVG also boasts integration with Pixabay (and other libraries with free stock photos and vector images), and with Google Fonts. The app also has configurable keyboard shortcuts (for over 100 commands), and provides you with various manual and smart guides on its official website.
Comparing Boxy SVG with Illustrator (we're not even going to mention Photoshop) or Sketch is somewhat pointless, as they're clearly premium products heavily geared towards the workflow of web designers and web developers.
However, what's quite interesting is that Boxy SVG really holds its own, and is a really good alternative for beginner users who are learning the ropes of SVG editing. Boxy SVG is a really good scalable vector graphics editor that works on both macOS and Linux, which is not something we can say about Sketch, for instance.
