TurnKey phpList Live CD is an open source software appliance based on the highly acclaimed Debian GNU/Linux operating system and designed from the ground up to be used for deploying dedicated servers with the phpList software.
phpList is the world's most popular open source web-based email campaign manager application that can be set up as email announcement delivery, newsletter, or publicity listing systems. The appliance includes all of the upstream phpList configurations, which are installed by default in /var/www/phplist.
Key features include the phpMyAdmin software for easy management of MySQL databases, a Postfix MTA (Mail Transfer Agent) for sending email messages to users, various Webmin modules for configuring Postfix, MySQL, Apache and PHP, as well as out-of-the-box support for secure connections.
The project is available for download as Live CD ISO images that are deployable to USB flash drives or CD discs and can be used for installing the operating system on a local disk drive. It supports both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware platforms.
In addition to the Live ISO images, the appliance is also available for download as virtual images for the Xen, OpenVZ, OpenStack, OVZ and OpenNode virtualization technologies, from the project's homepage (see the link above).
While the default username for the Webmin, MySQL, SSH and Postfix components is root, the default phpList username is admin. Immediately after installation process, which requires users to only partition the disk and install the bootloader, the first boot configuration wizard will kick in, allowing users to set the root password.
You must enter a new password for the MySQL 'root' account, as well as for the phpList 'admin' account, for which you should also add a valid email address and set the domain to serve phpList. Don't forget to write down the IP addresses and ports of the active services, displayed at the end of the first boot setup process.
The appliance can be managed remotely using the SSH or Web Shell services, as well as locally using the TurnKey Linux Configuration Console, which lets users to reboot or shutdown the server.
