Lubuntu For Linux

Launched on 22nd April 2021, Lubuntu 21.04 (codenamed Hirsute Hippo) is the 20th release of Lubuntu, and the sixth one to use the LXQt desktop environment.

Even though it's just an interim release (meaning it will only have support for nine months), 21.04 does bring some noteworthy, yet not groundbreaking, changes, in addition to the core features it inherits from Ubuntu 21.04.

Lubuntu 21.04 ships with the 0.16.0 version of LXQt that brings a series of interesting improvements over the 0.15.0 version.

Translations through Weblate are up and running again, LibFM-Qt and PcManFM-Qt have been upgraded, there's a reworked LXQt Panel (with a bunch of customization options), and an LXQt Archiver (Engrampa-based) that now works with RPM packages correctly.

As expected, the default apps and toolkits have also received a series of updates. For example, Qt (5.15.2), Firefox (87.0), LibreOffice (7.1.2),  VLC (3.0.12), Featherpad (0.17.1), and Discover Software Center (5.21.4).

Lubuntu 21.04 also features a new default wallpaper (that looks nice, but it's a bit busier than ones from previous versions), as well as a new welcome screen wallpaper.

Same as 20.04 LTS, 21.04 uses Calamares (3.2.37) as its default system installer (instead of the ubiquitous Ubiquity) which now features the option to fully erase a disk. Last but not least, the Lubuntu Team has been working on updating and making the Manual as good as possible.

In short, Lubuntu 21.04 is not what one might call a massive release, nor should it. Users who want the most stable environment can just as easily use (or continue to use) the 20.04 release, while those who want to experience the latest changes can give 21.04 a quick try-out.

The biggest changes in this release are the addition of LXQt 0.16.0, and the introduction of some great-looking wallpapers.
