Kubuntu 21.04, codenamed Hirsute Hippo, is an interim release, meaning it will only benefit from support for nine months, until January 2022.

As with all interim releases, its job is to provide users the latest and greatest open-source technologies, while also paving the way for future distributions and releases of Kubuntu.

21.04 may not be the main choice for most, and it may also not look very different from 20.04, but it sports various many core changes, including the new 5.11-based kernel, KDE Frameworks package 5.80, KDE Plasma 5.21, and KDE Release Service Applications 20.12.3.

One of the biggest advantages of Kubuntu is the way it looks, and Plasma 5 is responsible for that. The new 5.21 version promises to be smoother and sleeker-looking than the version it replaces with a new Application Launcher, various theme improvements, and, of course, the new Plasma System Monitor. However, Kubuntu's familiar ksysguard is also available by default.

Release 21.04 provides Firefox 87, LibreOffice 7.1, and Qt version 5.15.12. Other noteworthy updates are for Krita (4.4.3), Kdevelop (5.6.2), and kio-fuse (installable from the repositories, but not included by default in the ISO).

Just like 20.04, 21.04 allows users to make use of Wayland. In short, Wayland sessions can be installed and selected at the login screen. In terms of known issues, the bug where Apport-kde crashes when reporting bugs is still present, and various little ones regarding the installer and live sessions.

If you're a big fan Kubuntu and its Plasma desktop environment, then there's a good chance you will like 21.04. Conversely, one could argue that 21.04 does not bring anything major or particularly useful over the 20.04 release, which is also a long-term release.

What's new in Kubuntu 21.04:

  • The Kubuntu Team is happy to announce that Kubuntu 21.04 has been released, featuring the beautiful KDE Plasma 5.21: simple by default, powerful when needed.
  • Codenamed Hirsute Hippo, Kubuntu 21.04 continues our tradition of giving you Friendly Computing by integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.
  • The team has been hard at work through this cycle, introducing new features and fixing bugs.
  • Under the hood, there have been updates to many core packages, including a new 5.11-based kernel, KDE Frameworks 5.80, KDE Plasma 5.21 and KDE Release Service Applications 20.12.3
