14 DAY TRIAL // Linux kernel 4.6 was officially announced, as expected, on May 15, 2016, by Linus Torvalds, and we were just wondering which GNU/Linux distributions would be the first to adopt it.
Well, after less than 24 hours, we're happy to inform our readers that the first operating systems to offer users initial support for Linux kernel 4.6 are Arch Linux and SparkyLinux. Of course, Gentoo users can also install the Linux 4.6 kernel, but that's a different story.
Arch Linux developer Tobias Powalowski has announced earlier today that Linux kernel 4.6 entered the [Testing] repository, also informing the maintainers of the tp_smapi and all nvidia series packages that their binary modules are not building with the new kernel release, so they're urged to find patches to fix them as soon as possible.
On the other hand, the developers of the Debian-based SparkyLinux operating system were also proud to announce just a few minutes ago that the Linux 4.6 kernel landed in the operating system's "unstable" repository, instructing users on how to install it on their SparkyLinux-powered computers.
Of course, we don't recommend users to install Linux kernel 4.6 just now, but to wait until it lands in the stable repositories of the distributions mentioned above. And we do hope that more GNU/Linux operating systems will adopt the latest and most advanced kernel version, Linux 4.6, in the coming weeks. A possible candidate is OpenSuSE Tumbleweed.
