I've been working with my own remastered version of TinyMe for a long time, but the repositories have dried up, and the printing and wireless support was always lacking. So, I've been on a quest for an OS that would solve all three problems but still run on the 1ghz or less computers that I have a hobby of fixing up.
Answer? XUBUNTU!!!
I'd resisted the call of Ubuntu for a long time due to the lack of out-of-the-box dvd, mp3, media, etc. support. Once I managed to iron those out, though, I have a system that can do EVERYTHING without any compromises! Now I know I've got a system I can install over and over on my old refurbs and hand out to people.
Xubuntu has supported every wireless card I've thrown at it, and has not failed me on any hardware yet! I love the XFCE interface, too. It's more robust than Fluxbox, but still much lighter than Gnome and KDE.
I've installed and run Xubuntu on a system with only 600mhz and 256mb of ram, and it was playing DVDs and surfing the net!! It was a little slow, but it WORKED fine!
Very happy. I'm a complete convert now!!!
Ubuntu has really made a great OS, and further, continues to make a secondary version for older computers! MAJOR KUDOS to them!!! |
