Probably the best Ubuntu release to date, fast and stable. While boot has not been reduced to less than 10s, still very very fast even on modest hardware, ranging from 19s on an Atom netbook with an SSD to 30s on a Celeron desktop with an IDE HDD(XP SP3 boot time on both is over 60s). And apps launch quickly(even Open Office) and the GUI feels very snappy and responsive. The only exception was Nautilus which lagged a bit opening folders with large number of files.
GUI has the usual limitations of GNOME(not as pretty as KDE) and the promised ARGB(for true window transparency) capability was postponed to the next release, but makes up for it with lots of added functionality- Social Desktop integration, Ubuntu Software Center, Ubuntu One Cloud Storage and Music Store...
Properly detects and configures every piece of hardware and peripheral I have tried with it, including WiFi, Bluetooth, and even a 3rd gen iPod.
In my opinion, one of the best desktop OS around, and given the price, security and ease of installation, definitely worth trying out even if you don't plan to switch from OSX or Win7. You can still use it as an alternative OS or to put any old hardware you have lying around to use. |
