I have tried using Mandriva a number of times, and while it hasn't been a bad experience, I did find it rather heavy with stuff you never needed and sucked up alot of the system memory in the process. So, I decided to try this new release for May 2013. The best thing about it was the screen shots here, because everything else is terrible! I tried to install, which took at least 35 minutes, or longer! And after an incredible long wait it finally finished and restarted. But, just would'nt boot to destop, only lost in the darkness of the boot process. I tried several times, but no luck! I format and tried another distro! Of course I cant recommend it because it never worked for me!

I have had a terrible experience with Mandriva 2011. It takes a long time to start. Looks good once it does start but there the goodness ends.

Trying to do updates or install programs just keeps giving the following error:

"aria2 failed: exited with signal 7

    Failed to download lib64xcb-xv0-1.7-2-mdv2011.0.x86_64.rpm"

It even locked-up completely when setting the screensaver.

I am using a 2 year old Sony laptop that was supplied with horrible Microsoft Windows Vista (was suppose to be upgraded for free to Windows 7 but it never happened) and I am shocked with how many new Linux distributions that just do not work properly on it.

Previous versions of Mandriva worked much better. What a waste of time and energy Mandriva 2011 has been! I can now understand why they are in difficulties.

Mandriva has been at, or near the top of the Linux world for year, and with this new release they remain there! Its a very reliable OS, very robust with all the latest software and more. It may still need to speed up the load time, but that is a small price to paid for using a top-notch Linux distro. I would recommend users load this on a Dual-Core computer or higher, which has great graphics, otherwise you are going to be frustrated with the speed and certain desktop features not loading properly, or showing up at all. Highly recommended for inter-mediate users and pros.

A very good system overall. I like particularly the support for many printers und the good software repository for installing programs. Clean looks ! But on my machine (Packard-Bell AMD Athlon X2 64, ATI Radeon) it hangs frequently. Skype cannot be installed - dependancies missing and not available. Some very simple games - the ones that we played under DOS 20 years ago, won't work. I find it difficult and I haven't found out yet, how to change the desktop picture - for example - it should be a simple task. Sometimes the system cannot be shut down - it hangs with a black screen. Notwithstanding the few "faults" or "bugs" , I am quite happy with it.

I downloaded the Mandriva iso burnt it to a disk and could not the live version to install. It started git about 80% of the way then just stalled!
I have had this problem before with Mandriva.

Clean and well designed, improving on previous distributions by implementing users feedback.

Whilst I also use Ubuntu in various flavours, this runs sweet as a nut! Great for newbies, and my Gran would confirm that!

    Three other highly reommended Linux/distributions/distros
    are PCLinuxOS 2007...FreezyLinux 2.0...Kanotix 2007RC7..
...I dare write I like those 3 better than Kubuntu/KDE4
    ...also a great little partitioning/iso is GParted...I
use GParted to take a look at what the partition/tables
look like after installing Linux/iso(s)...to train myself
what the average/best partition tables look like...peace.

screenshots are of mandriva 2006. mandriva spring has a spring theme. it's very easy to use and it's simply to add software configuring easyurpmi.zarb.org or it's installation tool. it's got 3d techonologies and especcially supports beryl and metisse.
