I had OpenSuse running on an old Lenovo T42 with one gig of memory and it was a little laggy and had rotten battery life. I tried Lubuntu 11.04 after reading a review and it's worked very well for me.
it's definitely snappier than Opensuse was, and my battery that used to go two hours before dying is now giving me a solid 3.
I'm pretty new to Linux, so I couldn't tell you a thing about what's under the hood or anything technical at all, but I know that it loaded onto my hard drive just fine, found all my hardware "out of the box" and even works fine wirelessly with my HP 3050 all in one printer.
The layout reminds me somewhat of an old XP or even Windows 2000 screen- very simple, everything just expands from one menu to the next, nothing wobbles or flickers or inexplicably turns into a cube or otherwise just disappears, it's very predictable.
Overall I'm very satisfied with Lubuntu, it works, and isn't a resource hog. Can't complain at all.

I am only giving it \\\"Good\\\" because i can only get it working in live CD mode. On the other hand installation and read time of cd disk i say its poor, compared to other distros, hopefully the devs with fix this. I am on pentium 3, 256 ram, apparently it is suppose to work on less and its frustrating, so in all i am going use a different lighter linux distro, there is no free beer in this only water. I am a dev at sf projects & their is no excuse sorry, for them to of not fixed this by now.. i am sorry it had to be said, my opinion guys, sorry but its too much messing around when there are lighter linux distros that don\\\'t put you though this. I mad because i just refurbishing an old laptop, and i thought this would be great on it...

Lubuntu is very good. If you liked it, check out also an alternative with some of Lubuntu application gaps filled (also available at Softpedia but has an older description):

From the perspective of a learning Windows switcher and after having gone back and forth from Linux Mint 9 LXDE to Lubuntu 10.10 and back, here are my findings in no particular order:-

~ ctrl alt del in Lubuntu = task manager.BAD IDEA to me and a major annoyance. In Mint you do the combo straight to logoff menu.

~ system config samba lets Win 7 boxes see your shares on Mint EASIER.Not on Lubuntu. But as usual Samba and Win 7 can't play nice on both but far lesser work for it on Mint.

~ as usual you're forced to do the webupd8 PPA tips to get the essential extras/codecs on Lubuntu.More than half of that legwork already done on Mint.

~ Lubuntu's slight GNOME dependencies lets you customize the minor details such as mouse cursors.Mint does not have the feature.

    ~ Mint are actually snappier.

~ Of course Lubuntu being 10.10 makes it more current on kernel and stuff.Mint are still on Lucid 10.04.

~ I'm not sure if it's iptables or just me but for some odd reason Mint performs better for me in terms of general internet dl/ul speeds be it web browsing, streaming and p2p.

In a nutshell Lubuntu 10.10 feels more BETA-ish than Linux Mint 9 LXDE.

to everyone who is experiencing problems. there are two reasons why. 1) BURN the .iso on teh slowest speed.
    2) there is a bug in lubuntu that freezes on boot but dont worry if you wait long enough it will boot. it took me about a minute to wait ona blank screen ( black) and it eventually booted. It will be fixed on the final stable release. ANyhow you guys should also try linux mint LXDE edition its great.

lubuntu is nice. but its missing alot of teh main stream apps that come with ubuntu or linux mint LXDE edition.

I just want to say that I can not install Lubuntu. I boot from CD, then I press Enter, but after a time the process stop whit a black desktop and a clock cursor.
    What is wrong??
