Actually, gnome-mplayer gecko-mediaplayer is a replacement for mplayerplug-in. You are correct that gnome-mplayer originally was a test bed for some mplayerplug-in features but I found that the mplayerplug-in code (which is also mine) was too much of a mess to cleanup properly and add the features I wanted to add. So I created this application suite to replace mplayerplug-in.

The primary goal of the application is to play media easily and without a lot of fuss. I agree that some of the choices may be a little unclear and I can work on that.

As for the progress bar, usually (depends on the media) you can click on the progress part to get to a point in the media.
