I\'ve tried them all from fedora, to mint to ubuntu, added codecs got everything working to a point, then always some SNAFU, well only ArtistX seems to be holding up, no promblems for weeks, though a little slow loading programs.

    ArtistX 1.0: Got NO GAME.
Well, the download went smooth for ArtistX 1.0 LTS (Ubuntu 10.04) and the installation was a breeze. However, during the update process, 2mandvd failed to update. I know this is NOT the fault of the ArtistX team, but this is just info you. Quick update: The next day i was able to update 2mandvd.

What is strange is there is no "GAME" menu listed in the main menu or anywhere for that matter. I noticed that by default Gnome Games are installed (synaptic says so), but I can not get to any of the games because there is no menu. Updating the system did not fix this either. I tried using the main menu app to create the game menu, but the check box will not stay checked and thus the game menu option is not listed. Hey, all work and no play? If I can not get this resolved then how can I recomend it to others when there is Ultimate Edition 2.7 and 2.8 out there and I know, for a fact, that the "Game" link is listed in the main menu section. Just info you. Other then this, I do like the distro, a lot les to download and install, and I hope to fix this minor issue.

I was unable to resolve this, but admittedly I did not spend any real time trying and simply reinstalled Ultimate Edition 2.7. Sorry artistX.

REALY like it.Trying to find posts of KNOWN app conflicts to avoid.I am very protective of my favorite player, Audacious & have had issues where Kaffeine, RhythmBox, Banshee & even Amorok (,I think,) have not "played WELL" with it.As some1 who has multi-booted 20 OSs at 1nc B4,I have 2 say,I'm most excited about this 1 (I have 0.9).
Audacious seemed 2 have some amazing skins in Gnome Mandriva but I have more faith in Synaptic.Puppy & its variants R growing into an exciting monster but I'm waiting for ITS Package Manager to evolve a touch more & moonOS is purdy, but :"Does evereything WORK together right?" is what it always comes down to

OK, before anyone says it let me just say that I am now going to eat a big steaming plate of CROW. It appears that by just using the Hardware Drivers tool located in the system, administration menu worked to list the driver needed to get my Lynksys Dual Band Wireless-N Notebook Adapter to work. I think why this did not work for my graphics driver the first time was because my net connection was not active and I did not give it a chance. Oops. Anyway this tool worked for me in Ultimate Edition 2.5, and Mint 8, and now it appears that it works here in ArtistX 0.8 too. Oh, well if you are not breaking your own system then you are not learning anything. I guess I will have to change my prior rating to an "Excellent" as all my trouble was due to me and my faulty net connection. Patience is a virtue.

It worked! After a fresh and complete reinstall of ArtistX 0.8 my graphics issues have been resolved. This time I did not use EnvyNG, but synaptic and installed all the 96.43.10 nvidia drivers and now the screen saver \"Ant Spotlight\" runs fast and smooth. The screen savers are a great way to test your 3D acceleration troubles. Also I will not be applying the upgrade to 9.10 Ubuntu as I do not have another ten hours to waste. I have to change my review rating to only a \"Fair\" because without the automatic hardware restricted driver detection and installer this Distro is NOT for beginners.

Now to try and get my Lynksys Dual Band Wireless-N Notebook Adapter to work.

My system specs are as follows: Dell latitude D800 Laptop, CPU 1.7GHz Intel Pentium M, 2Gigs of RAM and Nvidia Gforce4 4200 Go graphics card.

ArtistX 0.8 seems at first glance to a be very good and complete distro, but it lacks any hardware detection for your graphics card, ie Nvidia. Linux Mint 6, 7, 8 and Ultimate Edition 2.5 do this automatically and I had no trouble with either Distro. But those other two do lack some of the software I really like such as Celtx. I installed EnvyNG and then installed the recommended driver, It is always the same suggested driver and I have done this before without trouble in other Distro's, but this caused ArtistX to become unstable and I had to boot in low graphics mode after that. While in that mode I tried the upgrade to 9.10, what a waste of ten hours, it did not work and still booted in low graphics mode. Now I have reinstalled ArtistX, a complete install, and will try the Nvidia driver I downloaded from the ArtistX website, 96.43.xx nvidia. If this does not work then its back to Ultimate Edition 2.5.
However, I still give this Distro, ArtistX, a good rating as some of these issues are no doubt due to my inexperience with Linux as a whole.

everythingh looks great until the upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 is attempted and then the Ubuntu Upgrade wiz runs out of disk space (on a 12GB root). Not their fault one says, question is why release a distro with Ubuntu 9.04 in Feb 2010, not one mention of this on their forum, yes I became a member just to check

ArtistX is close to being the best way to introduce new users to Linux, especially the Linux desktop. A little tweaking of the desktop, wallpaper, and perhaps the graphical user interface, would make this the ideal way for new users to become hooked on Linux. A live Linux DVD having full access to all features on the DVD, is the way to go for all distros.

I like the way all the audio programs I use, just works, out of the box with Artistx. On my ubuntu 8.10 " jack" will not work, period. Artistx works with the Nvidia drivers. Ubuntu studio will not. Ubuntu Studio boots into only a black screen after installing Nvidia drivers. With Artistx, "jack" works properly with the notation editors and the DAWs. Nice disto! This is not an RT kernel?!?

an amazing distro for graphic artist.

i have been searching for a distro that would contain all the softwares that i need for my movie creation project. the problem was that i have a very lame internet connection, so i download linux like ubuntu or mint, i hv to download and customise a lot. and if i crash my linux {i have done it 3 times already with mint -my fault} then i have to restart from the beginning.

enter artistx, the linux with almost everything. its a huge live dvd. from all the codecs to huge huge list of audio, video and graphics software list, i dont have to download anything. it also has java and flash pluin. nice.

best part is that its now based on ubuntu 8.10. i just have to add more repository to get more cutting edge softwares. very cool.

this is one of the best looking linux. although the i didnt liked the looks of the menu in gnome, nothing in comparison to mint. but it still rocks. it also bundles kde 4.1 and kde 4.2. so all of you who are dying to use kde 4.20 dig in. it also bundles compiz fusion for all 3d effects. the all dark theme give it a mysterious feel.

    the problem with artistx

ah althogh its a new distro, there are some software i would have loved to included in it since i am a graphic artist. it features a bit old blender. sadly there are no extra scripts with it. i would have loved to see blender with whole lot of goodies and scripts filled to the brim. only the very old yafray was included. the new one {yafaray} was just missing. talking of renderer, i wish they would have included luxrender and kerkythea also with the export script with blender.

although there is a huge list of sound editing and video editing software including my favourite cinelerra, i think lives is still missing. perhaps jahshaka could have been included as well.

the worst part is the installer. it doesn't have a standard installer. instead you have to boot the live DVD and use the installer. the problem is that i dont have a DVD drive, so i used unetbootin to kick start the live dvd. alas the installer would not let me install like that because one of my partition is mounted. come on guys, if you have based it on ubuntu why not a standard installer? i wish i could install it with wubi or mint4win.

apart from that its a great distro, whats so surprising is that even with so much positive aspects, this distro is not even listed as top 100 distro in distrowatch. but all this could change. i think this is the best distro that could happaen to an artist. if u are an animator, video editor, photo editor, audio editor, plz plz plz give this distro a try. m sure you will fall in love with it
