Using Absolute Linux is like going back in time 10 years. It is very buggy and fragile. I think they took a good server distro (Slackware) and kludged a GUI on top of it. It won't update itself without obscure errors and it won't update the kernel at all. It should work OK for you if you just login as yourself and limit your root logins. Unless you have a very old computer I'd recommend any of the modern distros.

This review is for Absolute Linux version 12.2.4
.....hard drive install went great on a Intel style
    socket 478 cpu/motherboard......this version
    successfully connected to Verizon/Indiana/dsl
    /cat5/cable.......where is the synaptic update
    manager?.......feature request.....(Check) First
user will be logged in automatically during and
after hard drive install......conclusion?.....I recommend Ubuntu 8.10,Kubuntu 8.10,
    SimplyMepis 8.0/32/64bit,Sidux-XFCE or
latest version of Elive.....tip:Elive contains Xine
    .....a superb DVD/movie player.

Please explain to me why the system requires a user name and password....when none is entered in the process of installing from disk...
    btw...how is it resolved..

Pros: Hard drive install was successful on only
    1 of 2 older socket 478 motherboard/Intel cpu
home test computers....cons: Firefox failed to
    connect to internet via Version/DSL/ethernet/
    CAT5/cable.....bug report: Font/letter/character/
resize menu does not work.....I recommend:
    Ubuntu 8.10/Kubuntu8.10/Xubuntu8.10/
Sidux-XFCE/Freezy Linux 2.0 instead..... feature request: (Check) "First user will be logged in automatically during and after hard drive install.".....Freezy Linux 2.0 needs this feature badly......all those password prompts in FreezyLinux2.0 get extremely annoying fast.....conclusion?....my 2 cents is that Absolute is still experimental so I would avoid it for now.....although I will continue testing future versions of Absolute on my older home test computers.

Bug report....2nd install attempt on single core/Pentium4/
i586/ABIT motherboard.....Input signal out of range
    .....H : 74. GHZ V : 59.7 HZ.....this happened on a
crt/box/16" monitor brand/AOC......I've got a gut feeling to give this distro many more install/chances.......this distro seems to like/favor
    the cpu/mb combo listed above.

Minor gripe......open message to all Linux/BSD/
    Slackware open source programmers.....please
add (check) box within/during install......"First user
will be logged in automatically.".......because......what is the point in installing a operating system.....if we can't get past
these anal-retentive user names and passwords
right after reboot ?!?!.....PC-BSD has this feature.....why can't other Linux/distros such as
Mandriva or Absolute has this simple added
    feature.....if I can't get past this user name/password after install....your operating
system is useless to me!?!?......then I am forced
to erase (off hdd) what would have been a cool Linux/o/s .....then I'll just stick/go back too using PCLinuxOS2007
......all because of a anal/retentive user name/password requirement after reboot.....KISS.....Keep It Simple Stupid....I do like this feature......"Autopartition hard drive, hard disk drive is dedicated too ???????? Linux.".......I use my Linux desktop inside my home......so (check) automatic password is fine......since I and many other Linux users are not in a office
building etc where a user/password would be
    required.......thank you.....Tim (Indiana)
