Wipe Free Space GUI Review by
4.0/5

Wipe Free Space GUI is an open source project that provides users with a GUI front-end for the Wipe Free Space tool. It is written in the Java programming language and supports both Linux and Mac OS X operating systems.

The user interface is quite easy to use and stands as a front-end for all the options of the Wipe Free Space command-line software. Nothing more, nothing less. However, you will need to add the path to the wipefreespace executable, which should be under /usr/bin/ directory in most, if not all Linux operating systems.

Key features include the ability to wipe free disk space only with zeros, specify superblock offset, blocksize and number of iterations, and additional wiping with zeros. The program also provides options for not wiping partially used blocks, unused blocks and undelete data. You can force the application to continue wiping on filesystem errors, as well as to disable caching, which can be very dangerous and lead to the destruction of the drive.

Lastly, the software provides users with the ability to choose between the following wiping methods: Gutmann, DoD, and Schneier. A random function is also available. Wipe Free Space is an open source command-line software that securely wipes the free space of a USB flash drive or external hard drive. It supports the EXT2/3/4, ReiserFSv3/4, XFS, NTFS, FAT12/16/32, MinixFSv1/2, JFS, HFS+ and OCFS filesystems.

The application can be downloaded as a binary archive or as a source archive. While the source archive is only for experienced users, most people should download the binary one and run the sh file. It is a portable program, which means that you only need to extract the archive and execute the run.sh file, using the sh run.sh command in a terminal emulator, or by double clicking it.
