Ubuntu Studio For Linux

Welcome to the Gutsy Gibbon edition of Ubuntu Studio, an open source project designed from the ground up to provide users with a special operating system for creating multimedia files without having to pay for expensive products. It is based on the Ubuntu 7.10 Linux distribution.

Ubuntu Studio 7.10 is an officially Ubuntu flavor and was announced by Canonical on October 18, 2007 along with other Ubuntu editions. It was supported with security patches and software updates until April 18th, 2009 and can be downloaded as installable only DVD ISO images for the 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.

The Alternate DVD feature a complex boot menu from where the user can install the distribution in text-mode, check the DVD for defects, rescue a broken operating system, perform a memory test, as well as to boot an existing OS from the first drive. Manufactures will also find a OEM install option!

In order to install this distribution on your computer, you'll have to boot the DVD from the BIOS of your PC, press the "Install in text mode" options, choose a language for the entire installation process, select your country, configure the keyboard and network, partition the disk, select a timezone, configure the clock, create a user, configure the package manager, and choose software to install.

The desktop environment used in Ubuntu Studio is powered by GNOME and provides users with a traditional and familiar graphical session that is also used in the main Ubuntu OS. Besides all of the multimedia specific applications, it also features some standard programs like the Mozilla Firefox web browser.

In order for users to take this full advantage of this special Ubuntu flavor, we strongly believe that Canonical should distribute it as Live DVDs. However, it proves to be quite good at what it does, especially because of the traditional and familiar desktop environment, as well as the great selection of multimedia apps.
