Welcome to the Karmic Koala edition of Ubuntu Server, a special flavor of the world's most popular free operating system that allows anyone to turn computers into dedicated mail, DNS, print, LAMP, OpenSSH, or file server. This release comes with the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud server component.

Ubuntu Server 9.10 was officially announced on October 29, 2009 and supported until April 30, 2011. It can be downloaded as CD-size ISO images for the 64-bit (amd64) and 32-bit (i386) hardware platforms. Keep in mind though, that this is not a live system and it must be installed on a local drive (see details below).

The boot menu of the ISO images will allow the user to start the text-mode installer and deploy the operating system on a local drive, install the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud server component, rescue a broken system, perform a memory test, boot an existing OS from the first disk, as well as to check the integrity of the bootable medium.

The entire installation process is text-based and will require users to choose a language and location, select a keyboard layout, enter the hostname, configure the clock, partition the disk with LVM and/or encryption, create a user, configure the package manger, as well as to select and install software.

As mentioned, this distribution will allow you to turn any computer into a dedicated server. Possible server types include cloud computing cluster, cloud computing node, DNS server, LAMP server, Mail server, OpenSSH server, PostgreSQL database, Print server, Samba file server, Tomcat Java server, or Virtual Machine host.

In conclusion, Ubuntu Server 9.10 (Karmic Koala) is yet another stable, reliable and powerful server oriented operating system that will run well on any computer. Be aware that this version is no longer supported and has been archived for historical purposes only.
