Ubuntu is a freely distributed and open source distribution of Linux based on the well known Debian GNU/Linux operating system. It is created by Canonical, a company owned by a British-South African entrepreneur by the name of Mark Shuttleworth.

This edition was dubbed Karmic Koala and it was the 11th release of the Ubuntu operating system. Even if it is no longer supported by Canonical with security updates and high-impact bugfixes, the distribution is still available for download.

It is distributed as a Desktop, Alternate, Netbook, and Server editions. Supported hardware platforms include 64-bit (AMD64), 32-bit (Intel x86), Freescale i.MX51, and Marvell Dove. The ISO images can be written to USB sticks or CD discs.

You can use the boot medium to try Ubuntu without any change to your computer, start an existing operating system installed on the first disk drive, run a memory test, or install the system without testing it (not recommended).

This edition of Ubuntu uses the GNOME 2.28.1 desktop environment, now known as the GNOME Classic interface. The desktop session is comprised of top and bottom panels, from where users can launch application, interact with running apps, as well as to access the main menu and system tray area.

Default applications include the Evolution email client, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Transmission torrent downloader, Nautilus file manager, Empathy instant messenger, F-Spot image viewer, GIMP image editor, OpenOffice.org office suite, Totem movie player, and Rhythmbox music player.

It comes with an early version of the Ubuntu Software Center application, as well as the Ubuntu One cloud storage client. It includes the Synaptic Package Manager, which allows users to easily install, update and remove applications from their systems.

Karmic Koala was a great release of the Ubuntu Linux operating system. It introduced Ubuntu Software Center, Ubuntu One, Disk Utility, better support for Intel graphics cards, as well as built-in support for the XZ compression format.
