Ubuntu For Linux

Ubuntu 6.10 is an open source Linux-based operating system built around the traditional GNOME desktop environment and based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution. It was dubbed by Canonical as Edgy Eft.

This edition is distributed as Desktop and Alternate Live CD ISO images, as well as a Server edition. Supported architectures include 64-bit, 32-bit and PPC (PowerPC) for the Alternate and Desktop flavors, as well as Sparc for the Server version.

The boot menu will allow users to start or install Ubuntu, start Ubuntu in safe graphics mode, check the CD for errors, run a memory test, as well as to boot an existing operating system installed on the first disk drive.

Ubuntu 6.10 uses the GNOME 2.16 desktop environment, and provided users with faster startup times, an optimized Linux 2.6.17 kernel, X.Org 7.1, MySQL 5.0, PHP 5.1, Python 2.4, several improvements to the graphical user interface, and updates to pre-installed applications.

As mentioned, the graphical session is powered by the classic GNOME desktop environment. It is comprised of two panels, a top one for accessing the main menu and launching applications, and a bottom one for interacting with running apps and switching between virtual workspaces.

Default applications include the Evolution email and calendar client, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Nautilus file manager, Ekiga softphone, and Gaim multi-protocol instant messenger.

It includes the Totem movie player, Rhythmbox music player, tsclient terminal server client, Brasero CD/DVD burning software, Sound Recorder, OpenOffice.org office suite, GIMP image editor, Synaptic Package Manager, as well as various games and utilities.

It was officially released by Canonical on October 26, 2006, and supported with security updates and important patches until April 2008, which means that all it includes unsafe and unsupported software packages.
