Lubuntu For Linux

Welcome to the Precise Pangolin edition of Lubuntu, an open source and freely distributed operating system derived from Ubuntu, but using the LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) project for the graphical session.

Even though the Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) edition is an LTS (Long Term Support) one, the Lubuntu 12.04 release is not, which means that it was supported from April 26, 2012 until October 2013.

Things have changed again in the Lubuntu world, as the distribution is now available for the PPC (PowerPC) and 64-bit Mac hardware platforms on both the Alternate CD edition and the Desktop CD flavor.

The boot prompt of the Desktop CDs is not changed from the previous release, allowing users to try the operating system without installing it, boot an existing OS from the first disk, run a memory diagnostic test, check the disc for defects (only if using a CD media), and install the operating system using the graphical installer.

On the other hand, the Alternate CDs' boot loader enables users to install the operating system in safe graphics mode, using the text-mode installer, as well as to rescue a broken OS.

Once again, the desktop environment has not been changed in the Lubuntu OS, providing users with the same traditional and clean interface that filled thousands of hundreds of computers worldwide. It is comprised of a single taskbar from where the user can quickly access installed apps, switch between virtual workspaces and interact with running programs.

Default applications include the Leafpad text editor, Xpad note-taking app, Disks disk utility, mtPaind graphic editor, Chromium web browser, Pidgin instant messenger, Sylpheed email client, Transmission torrent downloader, AbiWord word processor, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, Audacious music player, Xfburn CD/DVD burning software, guvcview webcam viewer, and GNOME MPlayer video player.

Even if it's not an LTS release, Lubuntu proves to be a very stable and reliable operating system suitable for low-end machines, as well as computers with old hardware components, because of the lightweight desktop environment and applications.
