A Linux Live CD demonstrating the Xgl window manager for the Fedora operating system. #XGL livecd #Linux distribution #Operating system #Kororaa #Xgl #Livecd
Kororaa AIGLXgl Live CD is an open source distribution of Linux based on the Fedora Core operating system and designed with the sole purpose of demonstrating the functionality of the Xgl and AIGLX technologies that are today known as Compiz Fusion.
The Live CD was created by Chris Smart, the main developer of the Korora Linux operating system (formerly Kororaa), and can be downloaded from Softpedia as an ISO image compatible with the 32-bit hardware platforms.
The main 3D technologies implemented in this project are AIGLX (Fedora's 3D accelerator for X11) as well as Xgl, a deprecated display server implementation for the X Window System. Users will be able to choose between the two technologies from the get-go.
Users can also choose the "None" option, which will disable all 3D effects and result in a "normal" desktop environment powered by KDE. It will automatically set the system to "None" for users of Nvidia video cards, as no open source driver is available.
Users of ATI Radeon might be able to use the open source radeon driver, although it does not support the latest graphics cards. Please note that the project does not include drivers for ATI Radeon or Nvidia graphics cards, therefore 3D effects will not be available on machines that require those drivers.
While the Xgl project has been deprecated many years ago, the Kororaa AIGLXgl Live CD is available for download on Softpedia only for educational purposes. It can still be used on modern computers, with or without 3D effects, and installation to disk is also available.
These days, various Linux-based operating systems include the Compiz Fusion compositing window manager for the X Window System, providing users with breathtaking 3D effects that can not be seen in commercial OSes, such as Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X.
What's new in Kororaa AIGLXgl Live CD 0.3:
- Major changes include the removal of non-GPL ATI and NVIDIA video card drivers; the inclusion of AIGLX now along with Xgl, 2.6.18 ck patchset based kernel, KDE 3.5.4, Gnome 2.14, updated installer and many bug fixes.
- The opensource radeon driver will work with many ATI cards, but not all the newer ones. If you have an NVIDIA video card 3D effects will not be available, however you can still use this CD as a "normal" livecd and installation to disk is available.
