Scientific Linux Changelog

What's new in Scientific Linux 7.2

Feb 6, 2016
  • External Repos:
  • With SL 7.2, yum-conf files pointing to non-base SL (such as EPEL, ELRepo, SL-Extras, SL-SoftwareCollections, ZFS) have moved to a central location. Since these repos are not specific to individual releases of SL, the separate location will allow for easier adding and removing of these resources for any SL7 system. To load a resource, such as EPEL: `yum install yum-conf-repos` followed by `yum install yum-conf-epel`.
  • Install Media Updates:
  • The install media now features the yum-fastest-mirror plugin. The yum-fastest-mirror plugin should locate a quickly responding mirror for network installs. SL specific yum vars are now expanded as expected.
  • Scientific Linux Contexts:
  • SL 7.2 includes initial support for Scientific Linux Contexts which should allow for ease of creating local customization for specific computing needs.
  • For more information on Scientific Linux Contexts: http://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/7/contexts/README.html
  • OpenAFS:
  • With SL 7.2 OpenAFS has been updated to version 1.6.16 the latest upstream stable.
  • Yum behavior update:
  • Backported patch from upstream for yum fs-vars, per BZ#1281593
  • Now yum vars set in /etc/yum/vars will be checked even in an alternate yum-root. Thanks for the bug report Lincoln Bryant!
  • IPA customizations:
  • The IPA packages have been customized to remove the upstream links to their support services.
  • Build Fixes:
  • The curl and mariadb packages were modified to ensure their unit tests for date validation worked after Oct 2015

New in Scientific Linux 7.0 RC2 (Oct 4, 2014)

  • .Updates to sl-release
  • Several community members uncovered a bug with our use of $slreleasever within the yum repos. This bug should now be resolved.
  • .Updates to sl-indexhtml
  • Several community members noticed the links in the default SL index.html pointed towards an obsolete URL. The page has been updated to reflect our new website.

New in Scientific Linux 6.5 (Jan 31, 2014)

  • OpenAFS has been updated to version 1.6.5.1 from openafs.org
  • alpine-2.10-3
  • yum-autoupdate-2-6.3

New in Scientific Linux 6.4 (Mar 29, 2013)

  • Packages changed/added:
  • OpenAFS:
  • OpenAFS kernel module package has changed. With SL6.0 we started packaging the OpenAFS client's kernel module according to the guidelines from TUV's Driver Update Program.
  • Due to unanticipated changes with the 6.3 kernel, we've had to revisit the process. With the 6.4 release, we modified the packaging to provide a dedicated build of the module for each minor SL release, instead of one module for all SL6 kernels. Since the EL kernel ABI is supposed to be kept stable within a minor release, this should avoid the problems some SL users experienced.
  • For those updating their system using yum, this change should be completely transparent.
  • yum-conf-sl6x:
  • This is now installed by default. You may remove it to return to the historical behavior.
  • yum-conf-sl-other:
  • This now features an entry for 'sl-addons' repo. For more information on sl-addons please view the README file within the repo itself.
  • xorg-x11-server:
  • Features a new ABI, this was a security errata so it should be available to earlier releases.
  • matahari:
  • Upstream has discontinued the matahari packages

New in Scientific Linux 6 Beta 1 (Jan 24, 2011)

  • penAFS fixed
  • The selinux openafs problem has been fixed.
  • SL_password_for_singleuser fixed
  • The mechanism to enforce password authentication has changed, that's now configured in /etc/sysconfig/init. This update reflects that change.
  • Compiled packages against TUV packages
  • We have finished the check of our packages against TUV packages. We check files, permissions, scripts, requires, depends, and a few other checks. When there was a discrepancy we rebuilt our package using different parameters to match TUV packages.
  • With this release we fixed the following packages. elinks jwhois perl-CGI-Session perl-IPC-Run3 perl-Makefile-Parser perl-Sys-Virt perl-Test-Memory-Cycle

New in Scientific Linux 6 Alpha 4 (Jan 10, 2011)

  • redhat-logos change:
  • Changed background
  • Changed background on gdm
  • change kdm theme
  • Plymouth change:
  • Generic (non-graphical) startup now has blue instead of red. Packages Added
  • OpenAFS 1.6.0 Added
  • liveusb-creator 3.9.2 Added
  • Packages Changed, but have the same name:
  • (This is done as we check our packages against The Upstream Vendors packages, find differences, and fix those differences.) adaptx bcel filesystem flute ibus jakarta-commons-beanutils jakarta-commons-httpclient javacc jcommon-serializer junit ldapjdk libbase libfonts libformula liblayout libloader librepository librsvg2 libwmf mutt pentaho-libxml pentaho-reporting-flow-engine python-imgcreate sac xml-commons-apis
  • ocaml-camomile removed:
  • This was put in so that another package could build. Since The Upstream Vendor does not want to support it, we do not plan on supporting it just to build one package.

New in Scientific Linux 5.5 (May 20, 2010)

  • We have added gnuplot42 as well as the iwlwifi 6000 ucode (firmware). The Upstream Vendor has also added freeradius2 and postgresql84, as well as updated OpenOffice to 3.1.1.
  • For the full list of what we have added, or updated, please see the release notes.
  • We want to thank everyone who has contributed, tested, and given us feedback. We say that every time, but we really mean it. Many of the features in Scientific Linux come from our community. Without everyone's contributions, help and testing, this release wouldn't be as good as it is.
  • Scientific Linux release 5.5 is based on the rebuilding of RPMS out of SRPMS's from Enterprise 5 Server and Client, including Update 5. It also has all errata and bugfixes up until the morning of May 18, 2010.

New in Scientific Linux 5.4 (Nov 5, 2009)

  • There are packages that we used to have to add to Scientific Linux, that are now already in Enterprise 5, and so we do not have to add them ourselves. Fuse, and it's kernel modules, are now provided by The Upstream Vendor (TUV). The Atheros wireless chipset is now supported by TUV.
  • We have added the iwlwifi 5150 ucode (firmware), as well as updated the 3945, 4945, and 5000 ucode. Lua has been also been added to the release.
  • For the full list of what we have added, or updated, please see the release notes.

New in Scientific Linux 5.3 (Mar 20, 2009)

  • Intel wireless has been updated and works much better. We have added the iwlwifi 3945, and 5000 ucode (firmware), as well as updated the 4945 ucode. Scipy has been added to the release, along with fttw and suitesparse to support it. Numpy was already in the release. Scientific Linux release 5.3 is based on the rebuilding of RPMs out of SRPMs from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 server and client, including update 3. It also has all errata and bug fixes up until March 17, 2009
