· Galaxy v.1.7 was tested under the following conditions: Intel Core-i7, 8 threads, Ubuntu 9.04. With more than 4000 stars, GTK had a tendency to lock-up, requiring galaxy to be killed. Removing compiz made no difference. AFAIK I was following the rules for using GTK in threads. For galaxy v.1.8, all GTK (graphics) calls were removed from threads and consolidated in the main() thread only. This also reduced the graphics update rate. Now it seems to be stable: I ran it for 40 min. with 20000 stars and 8 threads. CPU temperature reached 78C.
