squint For Linux

squint is a command-line, free and open source software implemented in C and designed from the offset to be used for duplicating the output of your monitor into a separate X11 window, so you can easily display a presentation on multiple monitors.

You can also use squint to display demonstrations on multiple monitors simultaneously, without the need to clone the entire screen. The best part is that when you use the squint utility for presentations or demonstrations, your laptop's LCD will remain completely available, so you can continue your work.

To install and use the squint program on your GNU/Linux distribution, you will have to download the bz2 archive via Softpedia or from the official website of the project (see link at the end of the article), save it somewhere on your PC, extract its contents, open a terminal emulator software and go to the location of the extracted archive files using the ‘cd’ command (e.g. cd /home/softpedia/squint-0.7).

Then, run the ‘./waf configure’ command to configure/optimize the program (run the ‘./waf --help’ command to see what options are available for optimization). To compile squint, execute the ‘./waf’ command. To install it system wide and make it accessible to all users on your Linux box, run the ‘./waf install’ command as root.

Looking under the hood of the squint program, we can notice that it has been written entirely in the C programming language and that it requires the GTK+ 3.0 or later, as well as Python 2 to work properly. Recommended, yet optional requirements include libxdamage, libxext, libxi. libxrandr, libxfixes, libnotify, txt2tags and gzip. The application is POSIX compatible and it should work on any Linux or UNIX-like operating system, supporting 32-bit and 64-bit hardware architectures.
