sg3_utils is an open source project that contains a comprehensive collection of command-line utilities specifically designed to send SCSI commands to Linux devices.

sg3_utils also supports devices on transports traditionally associated with SCSI, such as Fibre Channel (FCP), SCSI Parallel Interface(SPI) and Serial Attached SCSI (SAS), as well as SATA disks and ATAPI DVD/CD drives that connect via a bridge device or a translation layer.

The sg3_utils package targets the Linux kernel 2.4 and 2.6 branches and it is still under active development. The utilities included in this package have been ported to Solaris, FreeBSD, Tru64 and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
