KchmViewer is a completely free, cross-platform and open source graphical application implemented in C++/Qt and designed from the ground up to act as a CHM file viewer for the KDE desktop environment.

It’s a simple standalone viewer for Microsoft HELP files, doesn’t depend on KDE, it is compatible with other open source desktop environments, does not support JavaScript, and it is compatible with all distributions of Linux.

Key features include support for K*Widget, support for KHTML, support for KIO slave, support for persistent bookmarks, which can be modified or deleted, automatic detection of encoding used for the respective CHM file, as well as support for CHM files written in foreign languages.

The application warns users before switching to another help file or when opening a link in an external app, recognizes cyrillic and CJK characters, displays images for TOC (Table of Contents) entries, provides back and forward navigation, and lets users to print CHM files.

Among other interesting features, we can mention search query support, the ability to increase and decrease the font size, state-of-the-art search-in-page support, search history, bookmark history, complete CHM index support, the ability to search in non-English CHM files, as well as support for multiple index entries.

Looking under the hood of the KchmViewer application, we can notice that it has been written entirely in the C++ programming language, using the Qt GUI toolkit for its modern graphical user interface. It is officially supported on GNU/Linux and BSD operating systems, supporting 64-bit and 32-bit CPU architectures.

The fact of the matter is that CHM (Microsoft Compiled HTML Help) files are no longer available on Microsoft Windows operating systems, as they have been deprecated. Of course, this means that CHM viewers like KchmViewer are of no use to anybody.

What's new in KchmViewer 7.2:

  • Ported to Qt5 (but still builds and works with Qt4)
  • Added support for 3rd party integration
  • Fixed some minor issues
