ChmSee For Linux

ChmSee is an open source and freely distributed software project based on the CHMLIB library and designed to act as a standalone viewer for Compiled HTML help files that were used under the Microsoft Windows operating system.

CHM (.chm extension), short from Compiled HTML, is a document type, which has been developed by Microsoft since 1997 and until the release of the modern Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. The CHM format is also used by many application developers to create documentation for their software projects.

As its name suggests, ChmSee lets users view (see) CHM files under a GNU/Linux distribution or a UNIX-like operating system, such as BSD. The application uses the XulRunner run-time engine for XUL as the HTML rendering engine and supports the rich features of modern HTML pages, including JavaScript and CSS technologies.

The graphical user interface (GUI) of ChmSee is easy to use and straightforward. To view a CHM file, simply drag and drop it on the main window, or use the ‘Open’ options from the ‘File’ menu. It supports bookmarks and different view modes.

A quick look under the hood will show us that the software is written entirely in the C++ programming language and uses the GTK+ GUI toolkit for its graphical user interface. It is supported on any GNU/Linux operating system where its runtime dependencies are available, running on 32-bit or 64-bit hardware platforms.

Unfortunately, ChmSee is no longer developed, simply because recent versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system no longer use CHM files to display Help files, which are also known as documentation. It has been archived on Softpedia for historical references purposes only!
