Burp is a lean, multi-platform command-line tool that encrypts and decrypts files using a strong cryptographic algorithm named "Blowfish". The program can use either a long sentence-like passphrase, or a short (up to 16 random characters) key-string. It will normally read plaintext or ciphertext from one file and write its conjugate to another, but it will, optionally, read plaintext from the keyboard or write it to the screen, or encrypt file in-situ, overlaying the plaintext with the ciphertext.
Unlike many similar programs, BURP writes to the output file only the ciphertext (i.e., it writes no "file headers", password verification data, system, program or content identification strings, etc.). Consequently, such file can not be "provably" identified as ciphertext, as long as the key is secure, or unless it is broken cryptographically.
Burp requires no istallation and it can therefore easily be executed from removable media.
