Hardware Lister (also known as lshw) is an open source command-line utility and graphical software (gtk-lshw) designed to offer detailed information about the hardware components of the machine where a Linux operating system is installed.
The software is capable of reporting the exact memory configuration, mainboard configuration, firmware version, CPU version and speed, bus speed, cache configuration, and much more. It works on DMI-capable x86 or EFI (IA-64) systems, as well as on various PowerPC machines, such as PowerMac G4.
The software outputs the hardware information as plain text, HTML or XML document format. At the moment, it supports PCI, AGP, ISA PnP (x86), IDE, ATA, ATAPI, CPUID (x86), PCMCIA (x86), SCSI and USB.
System requirements
Limitations in the unregistered version
- on x86, it needs to be run as root to be able to access DMI information from the BIOS
- running lshw as a non-root user usually gives much less detailed information
- lshw is sometimes confused about where to connect emulated SCSI devices
