Ubuntu Builder is an open source, totally free and simple graphical utility implemented in Gambas for the Ubuntu Linux operating system and designed from the offset to help you build your very own and personalized Linux distribution based on Ubuntu, the world’s most popular free operating system.
The application has been engineered in such a way that it allows you to download, extract, customize (in many ways) and rebuild Ubuntu ISO images, all in order to create a customized Ubuntu-based distro. It provides support for both 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (amd64) versions of the Ubuntu ISO images.
Getting started with Ubuntu Builder
For users’ convenience, Ubuntu Builder is distributed as a PPA (Personal Package Archive) for Ubuntu and its derivatives. Just execute the following commands in a terminal emulator to add the software repository in your system and install the application:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:f-muriana/ubuntu-builder
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-builder
The program can also be installed manually, by downloading the latest version from Softpedia, using the dedicated Download section above, as a native installer in the DEB file format, which can be easily installed with Gdebi, dpkg or Ubuntu Software Center, as well as a source tarball or via the BZR (Bazaar) repository.
After installation, you can open the application from the Unity Dash of your Ubuntu distro (or the main menu of your desktop environment, if you don’t use Ubuntu with Unity). The GUI is very simple and straightforward, allowing you to select an ISO image and start customizing it.
You will be able to choose a specific desktop environment or window manager, install as many packages as you want, modify the graphical installer and the default software repositories, as well as to set a name and version for the distribution.
It is no longer under active development
Unfortunately, as of March 2014, the Ubuntu Builder project is no longer under active development, which means that it is no compatible with recent versions of the Ubuntu Linux operating system.
