Ubuntu Core For Linux

Welcome to the Trusty Tahr edition of the Ubuntu Core project that provides Linux OS developers with a minimal root filesystem (rootfs) for building full featured operating systems based on Ubuntu. This is a LTS (Long Term Support) release!

Please keep in mind that Ubuntu Core is not an actual Linux operating system. It's only a minimal root file system of an Ubuntu Linux distribution and it is distributed as tar archives, not ISO images.

Among the supported hardware platforms, we can mention the 64-bit (amd64), 32-bit (i386), ARMHF, ARM64 (ARM 64-bit), PPC64 Little Endian, and PowerPC (PPC).

In order to build your own Ubuntu-based Linux distribution, you'll first need to download three archives: the Linux kernel archive for the target device, the bootloader archive for the target device, as well as the Ubuntu Core archive for the target architecture.

At first, the target disk drive must be prepared, simply by creating at least one partition formatted with the EXT2, EXT3 or EXT4 filesystems. Next, you must extract the content of the Ubuntu Core archive to the respective partition, install the downloaded bootloader and Linux kernel packages.

Add a user and set a password for it, then add that user to the sudo and adm groups. If required, add modules to the Linux kernel in the /lib/modules/$(uname -r) folder. Lastly, boot the target device and add as many packages as you want using the apt-get command.
