4.0/5

OpenNAS is an open source and completely free computer operating system based on the popular and powerful FreeBSD project and designed to allow users to easily and quickly share files over the network using various protocols.

The project supports a wide range of file transfer protocols, including NFS (Network File System), CIFS (Samba), FTP (File Transfer Protocol), AFP (Apple Filing Protocol), rsync, and iSCSI (Internet Small Computer System Interface).

OpenNAS uses HAST (Highly Available Storage) for high availability, and supports S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) for hard disk drives (HDD). It also supports ZFS (Z File System) snapshots, target and initiator iSCSI, as well as the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).

Users will be able to configure the OpenNAS operating system via its easy-to-use Web-based user interface. For your convenience, the project is currently distributed as a Live CD ISO image that allows you to try the distribution without installing it.

An IMG file is also available for download for users who want to use the OpenNAS operating system from a LiveUSB device. Please note that the OS is supported only on 64-bit CPU architectures.

Whether you’re booting OpenNAS from a USB thumb drive or a CD disc, the live system will be automatically started and users will be dropped to a boot prompt from where they can choose to start the OS in normal mode, with ACPI enabled, in safe mode, with verbose logging, drop to a shell prompt or reboot the machine.

After the live system loads into memory, you will be able to access the web-based interface using the LAN IP address and network interface provided on the screen, as well as to do various administration tasks. The login credentials are also displayed on the shell interface.
