LXDE meets the FreeBSD operating system in this special edition of the GhostBSD project

editor's review

GhostBSD LXDE is an open source distribution of BSD built around the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE) project and based on the well known FreeBSD operating system.

Distributed as a 64-bit/32-bit Live DVDs

It is distributed as Live DVD ISO images that can be used as-is from USB sticks or DVD discs, as well as installed locally on a disk drive. Both 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (amd64) hardware platforms are supported at this time.

Boot options

The boot prompt is exactly the same as the ones of other GhostBSD editions, providing users with the ability to start the live environment in single or multi user mode. In addition, it can be used to access a shell prompt, configure advanced boot parameters, as well as to reboot the machine.

It has been designed to automatically boot into the live session in ten seconds, using the multi user mode. As mentioned, this edition uses the lightweight LXDE desktop environment.

Lightweight and clean desktop environment powered by LXDE

The desktop session features a single taskbar located at the bottom edge of the screen, from where users can launch applications or interact with existing ones, access the main menu and the system tray area, or switch between the two virtual workspaces.

Default applications

Default applications include the Apache OpenOffice office suite, GIMP image editor, Shotwell image viewer and organizer, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, and Transmission torrent downloader.

Additionally, the distribution includes Leafpad, a lightweight text editor, XChat IRC client, Wicd for managing Wi-Fi networks, the Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Rhythmbox music player, VLC Media Player, PCManFM file manager, Xarchiver archive manager, and many more other useful utilities.

Bottom line

Overall, the LXDE edition of the GhostBSD operating system provides users with a very stable and reliable computing environment, designed to bring new life into old and dusty computers. It comes with a handpicked collection of open source applications for everyday tasks.
