editor's review

ubermix is an open-source operating system based off of the world’s most popular distribution of Linux, Ubuntu, and specially designed for educators and educational purposes. It features a graphical interface tailored for netbooks, especially the ASUS EeePC 900-1000 series.

Available for download as an IMG file for USB drives

Being designed with netbook computers in mind, this custom Ubuntu operating system is available for download as IMG file that can only be written to a USB thumb drive using either the GNOME Disks or UNetbootin utilities (both of them are available for download on Softpedia).

Beautiful and attractive graphical interface designed for small screens

As mentioned, the main emphasis of ubermix is on supporting devices with small screens, such as netbook computers. Because of this, it features a special graphical interface that is beautiful and attractive, in the style of the one implemented in the Ubuntu Netbook operating system.

Includes a wide range of open source applications for educational purposes

Even though it is designed for small screens and tiny computers, the distribution comes pre-installed with a wide range of open source applications for educational purposes, among which we can mention Celestia, GeoGebra, iGNUit flashcard trainer, Klavaro Touch typing tutor, Scratch visual programming, Stellarium and VUE Visual Understanding Environment.

In addition, it features several entertaining games like FreeCiv, Frozen Bubble, GBrainy, Mahjongg, Mines, Multiplication Puzzle, Numpty Physics, Sudoku, Supertux, Tux Math and Tux Typing.

Among other interesting apps, we can mention Dia diagram creator, LibreOffice office suite, F-Spot and Shotwell photo managers, Inkscape vector graphics editor, Agave color scheme designer, Drawpile collaborative drawing tool, GIMP image editor, Scribus desktop publishing software and TBO Comic Creator.

Bottom line

In conclusion, ubermix is a great operating system for students and teachers who are always on the go and want a full featured OS for their tiny netbook computer.
