squitch For Linux

squitch is an open source and free distribution of Linux based on the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu, and designed to act as a penetration testing OS for security professionals who want to test their networks.

The distribution can be downloaded from its official website or via Softpedia (see link above) as a dual-arch Live CD ISO image, engineered to run on both 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64) hardware platforms.

Standard boot options are provided to users on the ISO image, no matter if it booted from a CD disc or a USB flash drive. These include the ability to start the live environment with default boot options or in safe graphics mode, start the installer directly, run a memory test, or boot an existing OS from the first disk.

It uses GNOME 2 (also known as GNOME Classic) as its default and only graphical desktop environment, but you will have to activate it first from the shell prompt using the “startx” command (without quotes). It uses a two-panel layout.

Among the pentesting utilities included in the squitch OS, we can mention Nmap, Angry IP Scanner, Wireshark, Zenmap, Nping, TCPdump, Ncat, Inguma GUI, Ettercap, Weevly, Xsser, Crunch, Xhydra, Exploitdb Search and Exploitdb Directory.

Default applications include the Xarchive archive manager, Ubuntu Tweak GNOME/Ubuntu tweaking utility, Gedit text editor, GNOME Terminal terminal emulator and Mozilla Firefox web browser.

Summing up, squitch is a great distribution of Linux designed for security professional who just want to test the security of their Wi-Fi networks without too much fuss. While the default language for the graphical environment is German, after installation you can add support for another language.
