simpleLinux Server Edition For Linux

simpleLinux Server Edition is an open source and server-oriented distribution of Linux derived from Slax, which in turn is based on the highly acclaimed Slackware Linux OS. It features the KDE 3.5 desktop environment.

The Server edition of simpleLinux is distributed as a Live DVD ISO image that contains software packages optimized only for the 32-bit (i386) hardware platforms, but will run well on 64-bit computers. A virtual machine image is also available for download on the project’s homepage.

When booting the ISO image from the BIOS of a PC, you will be prompted by a boot menu that allows you to start the live system with default options or in failsafe mode, start simpleLinux Server in minimal mode without the graphical desktop environment, run simpleLinux as usual and initialize a PXE (Preboot Execution Environment) server, as well as to perform a memory test.

It’s a bit strange for a server-oriented operating system to have a graphical session, but simpleLinux Server Edition uses KDE 3.5 as its default and only desktop environment, which has been beautifully designed to a two-panel layout and attractive artwork.

Being built around the KDE desktop environment, the Server flavor of simpleLinux includes mostly KDE-specific applications, such as the K3b CD/DVD burning software, JuK music player, KPlayer video player, KWrite text editor, Klipper clipboard manager, Kopete instant messenger and KMail email client.

In the Utilities section of the main menu, you can control a LAMPP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP and Perl) server. However, the distribution includes a dozen of other server-oriented packages that allows you to easily transform a regular computer into a dedicated server.
