gNewSense is an open source and 100% free distribution of Linux derived from the highly acclaimed and award-winning Debian GNU/Linux operating system. It is tailored specifically for users who want a computer operating system that includes only free (libre) software packages.
Distributed as 32-bit and 64-bit Live DVDs
The gNewSense distribution is available for download for free as two Live DVD ISO images or approximately 1 GB in size each, containing software packages optimized for 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x86_64) hardware architectures.
Default boot options include the ability to start the live system with normal configuration or in failsafe mode, start the installation directly in text-mode, graphical mode, automatic mode or expert mode, as well as to access the built-in system rescue mode, text or graphical.
Additionally, it is possible to install the system on your computer using the built-in and easy to use graphical installer provided in the live session, on the desktop.
Classic desktop environment powered by GNOME
gNewSense’s default and only graphical session is powered by the GNOME Classic desktop environment, which uses a two-panel layout. While the top panel includes Main Menu, App Launcher and System Tray applets, the bottom panel comes with the Workspace Switcher, Show Desktop and Task Manager applets.
