YANSYS For Linux

YANSYS (short from Yet Another uNix SYStem) appears to be a custom openSUSE distribution of Linux built with the popular SUSE Studio tool. It includes various open source applications and uses IceWM as its default desktop environment.

This is a minimalistic operating system that supports only 32-bit applications and it’s available for download as a Live CD ISO image of approximately 300MB in size, designed to support both 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (i686) instruction set architectures.

The standard openSUSE boot menu will allow the user to start the live environment with default boot options or in safe graphics mode (failsafe), boot an existing operating system from the first disk drive, perform a system memory diagnostic test, change the language, select a differnt video mode, as well as to add extra kernel parameters.

The main emphasis of this openSUSE-based operating system is on the IceWM window manager, which is used with success in several lightweight distributions of Linux like Puppy Linux.

It provides users with an old-school graphical desktop environment comprised of a single taskbar located on the bottom edge of the screen, from where they can cycle between the four virtual workspaces, launch applications and interact with opened programs.

As expected from the distribution of only 300MB in size, it includes a minimal set of open source applications, such as the Mozilla Firefox web browser, gVim text editor, XTerm terminal emulator, and GIMP image editor.

In conclusion, YANSYS lives up to its name, providing users with a minimalistic operating system built around the old-school IceWM window manager and suitable for very old computers with no more than 128MB or RAM.
