Welcome to the Karmic Koala edition of Xubuntu, an open source Ubuntu-based operating system that uses the Xfce desktop environment for a faster and more traditional computing experience suitable for low-end machines and computers with old hardware components.
Availability, boot options, supported platforms
Xubuntu 9.10 has been released on October 29, 2009 along with other Ubuntu flavors, and was supported with security patches and software updates until April 30, 2011. It is still available for download as Live CD ISO images, as well as installable only CDs, supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.
Once again, Xubuntu features the same boot loader on the Desktop CD, which means that the user will be able to try it without installing anything, boot an existing OS from the first disk drive, run a memory diagnostic test, check the CD for defects, as well as to install the distribution without testing it (not recommended).
Darkish, but still traditional desktop environment with a neat collection of apps
Finally, the development team decided to change the entire theme for the graphical session, going with a darkish one, yet still using the same two-panel layout. As usual, the upper panel will be used for accessing the main menu, system tray area and launching applications, and the bottom panel for cycling between virtual workspaces and interacting with running programs.
The innovations don't stop with the desktop theme, as the Listen app has been replaced with the Exaile music player, and Ristretto has been re-added, replacing the GPicView image viewer. Among other well known apps, we can mention Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, Transmission, XChat, Pidgin, AbiWord, Gnumeric, Brasero, Totem, GIMP and Synaptic Package Manager.
Overall, Xubuntu 9.10 is a beautiful, fast and modern operating system that uses the traditional and lightweight Xfce desktop environment, as well as the stable and reliable base of the Ubuntu Linux distribution.
