Xubuntu For Linux

Welcome to the Dapper Drake edition of Xubuntu, the first LTS (Long Term Support) release of the Xfce powered operating system derived from the world's most popular free Linux distribution, Ubuntu. It has been designed as a fast and lightweight OS suitable for low-end machines.

This Xubuntu release was officially announced by Canonical on June 1, 2006 along with the Ubuntu Linux operating system. It was supported with software updates and security patches until July 14, 2009. It is still available for download as Live Desktop CD and Alternate CD ISO images for the 32-bit, 64-bit and PPC hardware platforms.

The Desktop CD features a standard boot menu that allows the user to start or install the distribution, start the live environment in safe graphics mode, check the bootable medium for defects (only if using a CD media), run a memory diagnostic test, as well as to boot an existing operating system from the first disk drive.

The Xubuntu desktop is clean, powered by the Xfce project, which provides users with a traditional and fast graphical environment that uses a two-panel layout. While the upper panel will be used for accessing the main menu and launching apps, the bottom one will help you interact with running programs and switching between virtual workspaces.

Default applications include the GIMP image editor, Xfburn CD/DVD burning software, GQview image viewer, Xfmedia media player, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Gaim multi-protocol instant messenger, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, AbiWord word processor, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, Orage calendar, Disks disk manager, and Syaptic Package Manager for installing extra apps.

Summing up, Xubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake) was a decent distribution of Linux oriented towards low-end computers or machines with old and semi-old hardware components. It is no longer supported by Canonical and it should be used only for historical purposes.
