Welcome to the second LTS (Long Term Support) release of the Xubuntu Linux operating system, dubbed Hardy Heron and based on the Ubuntu 8.04 LTS distribution, but using the lightweight Xfce desktop environment for the graphical session.
Availability, supported architectures, boot options
This Xubuntu release was officially accounced by Canonical on April 24, 2008. Since then, it received a single maintenance release, Xubuntu 8.04.1 LTS on July 3, 2008. As usual, it is available for download as both Desktop and Alternate CDs, supporting the 64-bit (amd64) and 32-bit (i386) architectures.
Once again, the boot loader of the Live CD has been modified, as the "OEM install' and Install 'Xubuntu with driver update CD" entries have been removed, and the "Start or install Xubuntu" option splitted into "Try Xubuntu without any change to your computer" and "Install Xubuntu" entries.
The same two-panel desktop layout with new artwork
The same two-panel desktop layout is provided in this Xubuntu editions, but with new artwork suitable for an LTS release. The user will be able to easily and quickly open the pre-installed applications from the upper panel and interact with running programs from the bottom one. In addition, new artwork is now used for the entire desktop environment.
The GQview image viewer has been replaced with Ristretto and the Viagre remote desktop client has been added to the Network section of the main menu. The default email and web browser clients are still Mozilla Thunderbird and Mozilla Firefox respectively.
Among other applications, we can mention the GIMP image editor, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Transmission BitTorrent client, Totem movie player, Brasero CD/DVD burning software, Mousepad text editor, Thunar file manager, AbiWord word processor, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, and Synaptic Package Manager.
Overall, Xubuntu 8.04 LTS was a yet another great Linux operating system that should not be used today, as every pre-installed piece of software is deprecated. It is here only for historical purposes.
