VectorLinux KDE Classic is a free and open-source distribution of Linux derived from the Slackware Linux operating system. It is a special edition of the popular VectorLinux distro built around the old-school KDE 3.5 graphical desktop environment.
The KDE-Classic edition of VectorLinux is distributed as an installable-only ISO image that has been engineered to run on computers supporting either of the 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures. It fits perfectly on a CD disc, which can be used to boot the system and install it.
The ISO image comes with a standard VectorLinux boot menu, which allows you to start the installer. Simply press the Enter key on your keyboard at the boot prompt. It is also possible to boot an existing operating system, so follow the instructions on the boot menu.
The distribution uses a text-mode installer, which will require you to change the keyboard layout, choose a media source, partition the disk, and start the installation. After all packages have been installed, you must also install the bootloader, set the timezone, configure network interfaces and the sound system, choose a display server and startup services, enter a root (system administrator) password, set up users and passwords.
At the login prompt, use the username and password set during the installation process to enter the graphical session, which is powered by the classic KDE 3.5 desktop environment. It comprises of a transparent taskbar located on the bottom edge of the screen. Default applications include the Mozilla Firefox web browser, VLC Media Player, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Gslapt package manager, as well as numerous KDE-specific apps and utilities.
