Ubuntu Studio For Linux

Welcome to the Oneiric Ocelot edition of Ubuntu Studio, a totally free operating system based on Ubuntu and using a customized version of GNOME 2 as its default and only desktop environment, as well as a wide range of open source applications for multimedia production work.

Ubuntu Studio 11.10 was officially announced by Canonical on October 13, 2011 along with many other Ubuntu flavors, and supported until May 9, 2013. We know from reliable sources that this is the last Ubuntu Studio release distributed as Alternate DVD ISO images, which now reached almost 2GB in size.

Being designed to support both 64-bit and 32-bit architectures, the Alternate DVD can only be installed on a local drive using a text-mode installer, which is not so cool in the 21st century, especially when all other Ubuntu flavors have dedicated graphical installers and Live CDs/DVDs.

As this release is still available for download as Alternate DVDs, we feel obliged to instruct the user on how to install it. The text-mode installer will require you to choose a language and location, configure the keyboard and network, choose a timezone, partition the disk, create a user, configure the package manager, install the boot loader and set up the system clock.

From now on, the default desktop environment of Ubuntu Studio will be Xfce, which provides users with a more lightweight desktop experience suitable for a wide range of computers. It uses a top panel for quick and easy access to installed apps, as well as a bottom dock (application launcher).

In conclusion, we have to admit that Canonical did a very good job with the Ubuntu Studio 11.10 release, and we can't wait to get our hands on the next version, which will be the first ever distributed as Live DVDs.
