Welcome to the Raring Ringtail edition of Ubuntu Kylin, an open source distribution of Linux specifically designed for the Chinese Linux community who love Ubuntu's modern Unity graphical desktop environment.
Distributed as Live DVDs for 64-bit and 32-bit architectures
Ubuntu Kylin 13.04 was officially announced by Canonical on April 25, 2013 and supported with security patches and software updates until January 27, 2014. It is available for download as two Live DVD ISO images that support both 64-bit and 32-bit architectures.
As expected, the boot menu is translated in Chinese and designed to allow the user to start the live environment with default options, perform a memory (RAM) test, boot an existing OS from the first disk drive, check the disc for defects (only if using a DVD media), and install the distribution without testing it (not recommended).
Beautiful Unity desktop experience only for Chinese-speaking users
The Unity desktop environment offered in this Chinese edition of Ubuntu is pretty much identical with the one used on the Ubuntu OS, comprised of a top panel for interacting with opened programs and a dock (application launcher) on the left side of the screen.
Default applications include the Brasero CD/DVD burning software, Mozilla Firefox web browser, LibreOffice office suite, Empathy instant messenger, Rhythmbox music player, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, SMPlayer video player, Transmission BitTorrent client, and Remmina remote desktop client.
In addition, a handful of Chinese oriented applications will make your life easier when using Ubuntu Kylin as your main operating system. Among these, we can mention Chinese Calendar, Fcitx input method switcher, Indicator China Weather, and Chinese music search scope for Unity.
Summing up, the first ever release of Ubuntu Kylin did not disappoint at all, providing users with an astonishing and modern operating system that includes various Chinese specific programs. Unfortunately, it is no longer supported and archived for historical purposes only.
